Icebreaker/Expo Preview

The Sunday Evening Icebreaker/Exposition Preview (6–8 p.m.) will give attendees an opportunity to meet the exhibitors, map out a plan to visit companies, and renew acquaintances in a casual setting. The Icebreaker will feature a buffet of complimentary hors d’oeuvres, cash bars, and entertainment. The hours of the Icebreaker allow attendees to have dinner at one of many restaurants around Houston. Admittance is included in all full-delegate and Spouse Program registrations. Separate tickets are available for the Sunday night Icebreaker and the SEG Forum on Monday morning. Cost of the ticket will be US$60.

Extreme geophysics: From exploring Maya ruins to an Arctic Mars colony

SEG Houston 2009 International Exposition and 79th Annual Meeting

A special feature of the SEG 79th Annual Meeting is the Applied Science Education Program that is free to delegates. The program will take place on the morning of Wednesday, 28 October, with a keynote address by Robert R. Stewart. The address will last approximately one hour.

Stewart graduated from the University of Toronto with a BSc in physics and mathematics and completed a PhD in geophysics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been employed with the Chevron Oil Field Research Company in La Habra, California; Arco Exploration and Production Research Center in Dallas, Texas; Chevron Geosciences Co., and Veritas Software Ltd., Calgary. Stewart was a professor of geophysics at the University of Calgary and held the Chair in Exploration Geophysics from 1987-1997. In August 2008, he joined the University of Houston as a professor of geophysics, Cullen Chair in Exploration Geophysics, and Director of the Allied Geophysical Lab. He is also President of GENNIX Technology Corp., a geophysical consulting company.

Stewart received the Canadian SEG’s Honorary Membership Award in 2004 for “distinguished contributions in the field of geophysics” and the SEG’s Lifetime Membership Award in 2006 for “exceptional meritorious service to the Society.” In 2007, he was inducted as Fellow International into the Explorers Club of New York. He has led geophysical expeditions to explore Maya ruins in Belize, Central America and undertaken surveys in the Canadian High Arctic at the NASA Haughton Mars Project on Devon Island, Nunavut.

SEG Forum Series

The State of Energy R&D

Throughout the 12-year history of the SEG Forum series, the purpose has been to present subjects at the leading edge of the intersection of technology and the industry. The Forum provides a unique opportunity to interact in a broader context with leaders on subjects vital to the future of the industry.

This year’s SEG Forum is Chaired by Donald Paul, Executive Director of the USC Energy Institute and former Chevron CTO. His proposed forum title is “The State of Energy R&D.” The Forum will address the current state of industry R&D, its intersections with the significant changes and new investments occurring on the larger energy landscape. Guest speakers will come from across the energy spectrum, including oil and gas companies, technology and service companies, government agencies, universities, and venture investments.

SEG Golf Tournament

The 2009 SEG Pre-Convention golf tournament will be hosted at Wildcat Golf Club. The Highlands Course has rolling fairways coupled with fast greens that give golfers the feeling of playing in Scotland, the home of golf. And while the course may feel like one overseas, it is unmistakable that you are in Houston. The Highlands Course offers panoramic views of the city, from the Galleria area to the Medical Center to Reliant Park to downtown. It’s breathtaking.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, 24 October, at 8:30 a.m. and will be Four-Man Texas Style Scramble. The cost is US$185 per golfer until 23 September. After 23 September, registration cannot be
made online and the cost goes up to US$210 per golfer. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis, and with this location, you will want to secure your spot right away!

Registration includes breakfast buffet, green fees, cart, polo shirt, great prizes, and luncheon awards reception. Transportation will be provided from the George R. Brown Convention Center. Please indicate with your registration if you would like to take advantage of the transportation.
