SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program

SEP photo collageThe SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program (SEP) offers travel grants to graduate students who are pursuing a degree in the Geosciences. (Consideration will be given to highly qualified undergraduate students.)

This 2-day program focuses on preparing college graduate students for the breadth and challenges of an oil industry career by spurring interest to pursue such a career, as well as develop lifelong relationships with the SEG and its members.

What is the SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program?

This 2- day program will include lectures and exercises efficiently delivered/conducted and directly related to geoscience/geophysical work performed in the oil industry. ExxonMobil will provide course materials, team exercises, and instructors. Accepted applicants will be assigned to the SEP occurring in their geographical region.

Travel grant applications will be posted on the SEG Web site no later than 1 December 2009.

Step 1: Check you applicant and geographical eligibility

Applicant eligibilty:

The applicant must be pursuing a graduate degree in the Geosciences. (Consideration will be given to highly qualified undergraduate students.)

  1. The applicant must have above average grades.
  2. The applicant must not have graduated by the time the SEP occurs.
  3. The applicant must not have participated in a previous SEP.
  4. The applicant must be residing in the geographical region of the SEP.
Geographic eligibility
  1. SEG Annual Meeting
    Students residing in North America will be eligible to apply to the SEP held in conjunction with the SEG Annual Meeting. The 2010 Annual Meeting will be held 15–21 October, Denver, USA.
  2. SEG-Affiliated International Meetings
    Students residing in a geographical region where an SEP is being held in conjunction with a professional meeting will be eligible to apply.
  • RUSSIA: St. Petersburg, 9-10 April 2010
    Applications are being accepted. Application deadline: 18 January 2010
  • EUROPE: Bucharest, Romania, 20-21 April 2010
    Applications are being accepted. Application deadline: 25 January 2010
  • NORTH AMERICA: Denver, 15-17 October 2010
    Applications are being accepted. Application deadline: 1 July 2010

Step 2: Obtain a recommendation letter

You will need a recommendation letter in support of your application from your faculty advisor or a professor with whom you are academically acquainted. The recommendation letter must be signed by your faculty advisor or professor.

Step 3: Obtain your transcript

You will need your most recent semester grades or academic report (transcript).Graduate students need to submit your undergraduate transcript if you do not have sufficient documentation.

Step 4: Complete the online application

All applicants must apply online: 2010 SEP application

Please note: If awarded a travel grant you will be required to complete an Anti-Terrorism Affidavit.
