The
Society of Exploration Geophysicists is a not-for-profit organization
that promotes the science of geophysics and the education of applied
geophysicists. SEG, founded in 1930, fosters the expert and ethical
practice of geophysics in the exploration and development of natural
resources, in characterizing the near surface, and in mitigating
earth hazards. The Society, which has more than 26 000 members in 129 countries, fulfills its mission through its publications,
conferences, forums, Web sites, and educational opportunities.

SEG encourages its members to learn about the
newest technologies by sponsoring speakers, publishing new theories
in periodicals and other formats, and organizing continuing education classes around the world. Through SEG, members can network and learn
from other professionals.

SEG marks 77 years
The Society
of Exploration Geophysicists' 77th Annual Meeting in San Antonio attracted attendees from more than 99 countries. But perhaps the most notable achievement this year was the quantity and quality of student participation. Plan on participating in SEG's upcoming meetings.

SEG offers several e-mail newsletters free of charge. Stay up to date on SEG activities and opportunities by subscribing today.

Committees
As a not-for-profit Society, SEG relies on its committees to keep
the organization running smoothly. These committees manage everything
from the organizational government to technical matters of geophysical
interest to the Society's publications.

Foundation
The SEG Foundation encourages and supports scientific, educational,
and charitable activities of benefit to geophysicists, through solicitation
of contributions. Activities supported by contributions to the SEG
Foundation are intended to supplement those supported by SEG's operating
budget.

Student activities
Students benefit from SEG's involvement with 183 student sections in 43 countries. The professional ties they develop, along with information they get from student membership, prepare them for a career in the worldwide field of geophysics. SEG also offers services for students grades kindergarten through 12 and beyond.

Geoscience Center
The SEG Geoscience Center consists of three parts: the Museum of
Geophysical Exploration is located at the Geophysical Resource Center
(GRC) in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Virtual Museum which can be accessed
globally via the internet; and the Traveling Museum which is taken
to professional meetings, such as the SEG Annual Meeting, and will
also be available to local schools and science fairs.
