The Second East Africa SEG Challenge Bowl Report

The Second East Africa Challenge Bowl, held on 21 June 2013, was organized by the Jomo Kenyatta University Geophysical Society, SEG Student's Chapter and sponsored by Oil and Energy Services Ltd and Afren PLC.

The crème de la crème of geosciences students from East African universities converged in Nairobi to compete in the challenge bowl. The six participating teams were students from the University of Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania), Makerere University (Uganda), University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University, and Egerton University (Kenya).

Prior to the competition, the students got a chance to interact with Oil and Gas industry players at the 4th East African Oil and Energy Conference which ran from the 19-20 June in Nairobi, hosted by Global Pacific and Partners. On 21 June, the six teams congregated at Jomo Kenyatta University, (JKUAT) for the challenge bowl which was both fun and competitive.

As in every competition, a winner had to be crowned. The bright and resolute students from Makerere University, Micheal Kazinda and Bulo Christopher, emerged as the East African Champions (pictured left). The winners of this regional Challenge Bowl were awarded a travel grant to attend the 83rd SEG Annual Meeting in Houston, USA and compete in the International Finals. This will give the winners an opportunity to participate in a world class conference where they will learn from the technical presentations and exhibition, and network with professionals and peers from around the world. This year, the 83rd International Exposition and SEG Annual Meeting will be held in Houston from 22-27 September 2013.
