GEO Bahrain held from 4-7 March gave exciting opportunities to students and academia around the region. One of the highlights of the conference was a successful SEG-2012 Student Challenge Bowl hosted by Dhahran Geoscience Society (DGS) and SEG, sponsored by BGP Saudi Arabia. Students in the region showed heavy interest in the competition with participation from 9 teams.

The event was emceed by Dr. Richard Miller, SEG Second Vice-President. The Challenge Bowl is a contest testing students' breadth and depth of knowledge about the field of geoscience. The quiz show format features intense competition as the contestants attempt to buzz in first with the answers to challenging geoscience questions.

When the dust settled and all the scores were tallied, the team of Mina Salib and Hasan Zakaria of the Petroleum Institute UAE took first place and received an all-expenses paid trip to the SEG Challenge Bowl Finals to be held at SEG's Annual Meeting in Las Vegas this November. Finishing in second place was Ali Dawoodand Bingmu Xiao of the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology Saudi Arabia.

This year's SEG Challenge Bowl was a success due to the efforts of the Dhahran Geoscience Society team "Mr. Mahmoud Hedefa and Saeed Alghamdi" and Yoganni Bhatia fom SEG. Lastly, a special vote of thanks from Dhahran Geoscience Society and SEG to BGP Saudi Arabia for sponsoring this event and showing their strong support for the future Geoscientists in the region.
