Jan Thorbecke

Jan Thorbecke has over 25 years experience in high performance computing (HPC). He is currently working for Cray as a pre-sales application engineer and is connected to the University of Delft as a senior researcher in the group of Professor Wapenaar at the Geoscience department. Jan received his PhD in 1997 for Applied Geophysics (DELPHI program) of the Physics department at the Technical University of Delft. 

During his PhD Jan started to enjoy scientific programming as well and recognized the importance of a well written and good performing implementation. After his PhD in Common Focal Point (CFP) technology he joined Cray to do research in the combined field of Geophysics and HPC. Jan has published papers on imaging and migration techniques, seismic interferometry and modeling. 

In his current work at the University of Delft Jan is working on seismic interferometry, wavefield modeling and helps students with scientific programming problems. His work at Cray involves the porting and optimization of scientific programs used in weather forecast, climate modeling, molecular dynamics, chemistry and CFD. Jan is teaching HPC at the University of Delft and for his work at Cray he occasionally gives specialized training courses in HPC.
