SEG Student Chapters

SEG is committed to "inspiring the geoscientists of tomorrow" and our student chapters are excellent resource to increase the interest within their peers about geophysics. SEG Student Chapters empower students to participate and spearhead projects that will address issues, challenges, or opportunities related to SEG's mission of promoting the science of geophysics.

All chapters are required to send us their annual activity report by 1 April for the previous academic year.

Process

  1. Download and fill out the Student Chapter Activity Report.
  2. Report is to be filled out by the Student Chapter officers and /or the Faculty Advisor.
  3. Upload the completed activity report to the application and hit submit. You must submit the application and the activity report.
  4. All applications with reports will be evaluated by the Committee on University and Student Programs.
  5. Student Chapters will be notified of chapter status (Base, Ridge, and Summit) by August 1 2012.
  6. Students Chapters will be recognized at the SEG.

The process is easy:

  1. Form a group of at least 10 students and one faculty advisor.
  2. Write a petition letter to the SEG President requesting to form a chapter.
    Be sure to include the following in your letter:
    • Interest in forming a chapter
    • Faculty Advisor information and student chapter mailing address
    • Faculty Advisor signature
  3. Elect officers, including President, Secretary, and Treasurer, and provide their e-mail address.
  4. Provide a constitution for your chapter (click here for a sample constitution).

 

Keep your Student Chapter active

Chapters can organize and participate in a variety of programs, from field trips to workshops, forums, and the SEG Distinguished and Honorary lecture program. Send us a yearly report and officer roster to let us know of your latest activities and meetings.
