Following the theme, "FSU/Europe: Unite in Denver", those attending the reception Tuesday afternoon enjoyed Russian and European foods and music featuring a vocalist and trio playing balalaika, guitar, and accordion. SEG President Steve Hill opened the reception, marking 15 years of success for the International Showcase Global Theater. "Because of the efforts of the Global Theater to promote globalization, new sections, new conferences, and new workshops have been created," Hill said. "But the greatest result is that these efforts have engaged new volunteers." In a session Monday afternoon, the Global Theater showcased various technologies developed in the Rocky Mountain basins surrounding Denver—technologies that now have worldwide appeal in the search for unconventional reservoirs like tight gas sands, shale gas, and shale oil production. This session covered technologies from other disciplines besides geophysics, and involved speakers traditionally associated with SPE, AAPG, and RMAG. Global Theater presentations on Tuesday and Wednesday, 23 in all, covered specific technological challenges facing the region. Speakers presented several case studies that attracted internationally minded geophysicists, managers, and executives of resource and service companies seeking insight from the presentations focused on the FSU and Europe. Other presentations addressed issues related to young geoscientists, multidisciplinary training, and strategies for the future.
