SEG Global Membership surges
Nearly two members in three working, studying outside the U.S.
In 2009, SEG membership grew to nearly 32 000. Of that number, nearly 65% reside outside the U.S.
SEG Membership Committee Chairman Aldo Vesnaver attributes this surge in international growth to SEG’s amazing support from corporate sponsors and the dedicated outreach of SEG’s volunteers.
Also noteworthy is the growth of Student Members. In addition to a sustained increase in Nigeria during the past few years, Student Membership in Pakistan, India, and China has grown significantly. SEG also has observed steady growth in U.S. Student Membership. Furthermore, the retention percentage for students in World Bank III and IV countries who elect to receive free Associate membership upon graduation has been quite good—more than 50% since its inception in 2005.
This growth is testament to the overall value SEG membership brings, including:
SEG publications
The Leading Edge (published monthly) and Geophysics (published bi-monthly) offer articles that cover the entire spectrum of geoscience, as well as Society news. SEG members also receive online access to the SEG Digital Library and the SEG Yearbook.
Members also receive substantial discounts on SEG reference publications.
Meetings and workshops
SEG meetings offer valuable education and networking opportunities to keep you on the leading edge in your career, and SEG members receive substantial discounts on meetings such as:
Annual Meeting: SEG's Annual Meeting and Exposition is the world's premier geophysical event, featuring more than 700 technical paper presentations and an exposition showcasing the latest in geophysical products and services. It regularly brings together more than 8000 exploration industry professionals from around the globe.
Development & Production Forum: This annual event brings new and emerging development and production technologies into open discussion, with the dual purpose of education and exchange of ideas.
Summer Research Workshops: Held annually, these workshops examine, clarify, and promote research in a wide range of applied geophysics topics.
International meetings: More than 65% of SEG's members live outside the United States, and one of the ways SEG serves them is through a growing international meetings program.
Professional development: Members obtain essential training in geophysics and career-enhancing skills through continuing education courses and lecturers at special member prices. SEG offers Continuing Education courses, SEG/EAGE Distinguished Instructor Short courses, and Distinguished and Honorary Lectures.
Networking: SEG meetings and courses provide outstanding opportunities for geoscience professionals to network with their associates in academics and industry. Members also enjoy interaction with their peers through geographic sections and special-interest committees.
Members-only Web page access: Access SEG Online for Society information, review and receive discounts on products and services, change your membership information, or search the membership directory.
Employment referral: The SEG Employment Referral site allows job-seeking members to post their résumés. Helpful site links are also accessible as a service to our members that are career transitioning. Employers can use the same venues to post job opportunities.
In addition, new initiatives this year have emphasized the priority SEG places on serving its members by offering easier ways to join SEG. For example, the membership committee recently voted to smooth the path to Active Membership by waiving the reference requirement for Associate Members with eight or more years of membership. The Society also has made it easier to participate in elections, rewarded members who recruit new members, and expanded the resources and benefits available online.
Stop by the Membership Services booths located in Level 1, Hall D of the Brown Convention Center and the SEG Pavilion for more information on the myriad benefits of SEG membership. Members also can:
