Roxanne Cook, Web Content Lead, SEG
27 October 27—The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) took advantage of the more than 9000 attendees at the International Exposition and 79th Annual Meeting to launch their newest product, Online Courses. An idea that has been on the minds of SEG Professional Development staff, Executive Committee members, and geoscientists and students living in remote areas, needing some additional training in their fields of studies. Expo attendees, Executive Committee members, and CNPC, the online course sponsor, attended the product launch.
David Carlson, outgoing Chairman for SEG’s Continuing Education Committee stated, “This is a much needed product. This will enable SEG to reach more remotes areas. The brainstorming began a long time ago, with the implementation getting started in February 2009.”
The first online course, An Interpreter's Guide to Seismic Attributes, touches on the successful use of seismic attributes requiring an understanding of seismic data quality and sedimentary and tectonic processes. Participants will gain an understanding of the physical basis, geologic expression, and petrophysical calibration of seismic attributes.
Cost of the online courses:
- Member US$795
- Nonmember US$995
Courses are good for 30 days from the time of purchase.
Kurt Marfurt, the first online course instructor said, “I’m so excited about being chosen to teach the first online course. SEG understands the importance of outreach, especially to more remote areas.” Marfurt went on to say that SEG will have an international advantage to reach students and companies in isolated areas. Countries with English as a second language also will have an enormous benefit from these courses.
Bob Bruce, SEG’s Continuing Education Committee incoming Chairman, simply stated, “The future is online and SEG understands that and is glad to move in that direction.”
SEG hopes the launch of their new online courses will give users the “anytime, anyplace” ability to learn more in their fields of study.
Alex Kendrick, a junior at Los Alamos and winner of the International Science Engineering Fair, is excited about the direction SEG is heading with online courses, as well as professional networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. “The steps that SEG is taking provide an excellent opportunity for students, like me, who might not otherwise have the chance to study geophysics,” said Kendrick.
It’s clear that SEG appreciates technology and its advances in geophysics, and understands what geophysicists and students need in order to continue their growth in the field of geophysics.
