| "This year's Annual Meeting will give attendees...a high- quality Technical Program with more posters." -Annual Meeting General Chairman, Ken Helm | | W-5 Full Waveform Inversion: Beyond the Phase of Direct Acoustic Arrivals Date: Thursday, 22 September Time: 1:30 p.m-5 p.m. Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Room 214 C Organizers: Scott Morton, Jacques Leveille, Jim Gaiser, Paul Williamson, and Robert Bloor Through the support of the SEG Research Committee Description: Most of the successful application of full waveform inversion (FWI) relies on matching the phase of direct acoustically-simulated arrivals with the real data using local optimization methods. The purpose of this workshop is to evaluate where we are with regard to using other aspects of the data and other methods to invert for our models. We hope this workshop will answer (or at least address) questions like: - How important are or what is the value of the amplitudes of the data in the inversion?
- What is the measured uplift of using reflected arrivals?
- Do we need to be doing elastic simulation or is acoustic good enough?
- Can we use surface waves to constrain our near-surface models? Converted waves? Shear waves?
- Are non-local optimization methods feasible and do they have values?
