Many operating companies have been intrigued by the success demonstrated in North America of unconventional resources, mainly shale gas.

However, there are many outstanding technical challenges facing geoscientists in the Middle East & North Africa regions when searching for unconventional resources with significant economic value.

This workshop will focus on the role of geophysical technologies to explore and develop shale gas and tight sand reservoirs.

Several key themes will be covered and best practices will be shared among the participants. We will be examining the following topics and invite abstracts on Geophysics and Unconventional:
  • Geophysics in Basin Modeling
  • Economic viability of Geophysics vs. drilling a well
  • Pushing the limits of legacy data
  • Seismic Data Acquisition strategies
  • Multi component seismic data
  • Seismic data processing workflows
  • Petro-Physics and Rock Physics
  • Geomechanical models
  • Integrity of wellbore, reservoirs and seals
  • Fracturing and Micro-seismic applications
  • Reservoir Characterization and sweet-spot mapping
  • Emerging technologies
  • Defining technology gaps
  • Integrity of wellbore, reservoirs and seals
Who should attend?

The workshop will cover wide topics from exploration of basins to fracturing and production with special focus on seismic, sonic and workflows used. Geophysical techniques will be presented with case studies to demonstrate the applications and assessment of these unconventional resources.

The workshop will be of significant interest to Geoscientists, but reservoir and production engineers would also benefit from this workshop because it will serve as an eye opener to technologies fundamental to unconventional resource plays.

Workshop Format

The workshop will feature presentations from authors whose presentations are chosen from those who respond to the Call for Abstracts and from invited key experts in the field who will share their experiences.

Location and Dates

The location of the workshop is The InterContinental Dubai Festival City and will be held from 17-20 November 2013. All meetings and guest accommodations will be in that hotel which is part of Festival City Mall, Dubai's unrivalled waterfront destination for style and sophistication, showcasing prestigious retailers, international food and beverage outlets and a world-class entertainment retreat.

Visa Information and Invitation letters

Participants in the SEG Workshop on The Role of Geophysics in Unlocking Unconventional Reservoirs may generate an official invitation letter using the form below. This form will generate a letter which you can print and use in obtaining a visa.  For complete visa information and requirements for entering the United Arab Emirates, go to www.mofa.gov.ae/english. From the list of choices on the left side of the page, chose Consular Services and then Visa Information.

The InterContinental Dubai Festival City can provide assistance securing a visa for a fee but you must be staying in the hotel for the duration of your visit to the country. For information on the hotel visa services, please contact ppryor@seg.org.

For those whose company or organization is planning on sending more than one individual to the workshop, additional documentation may be required for scheduling an appointment with the local United Arab Emirates Embassy. If additional assistance is required, fill out a separate invitation letter for each individual requesting a visa using the form below. Each invitation letter has a unique reference number. Produce one cover letter listing all individuals requesting a visa. The letter must include the following information for each individual:

  • Name
  • Passport number
  • Date and place of birth
  • Nationality as it appears on the passport
  • Reference number from the invitation letter

Fax these forms together with the cover letter printed on the group's official stationery to +1 (918) 497.5557, attention Visa Letter Assistance. Please note that this letter does not guarantee that you will be granted a visa, nor does it commit SEG to pay any expenses you may incur. It is the sole responsibility of the attendee to obtain the necessary paperwork for entry to the United Arab Emirates.
