Workshop Announcement (PDF)

The multi-disciplinary integration of geosciences has made a lot of progress in the last decade; but this progress is often limited to the early stages of the production chain (e.g., acquisition-processing) and mostly to two techniques (e.g., seismic-gravity, active-passive seismic). Rarely does the integration include three or more data types and seldom can we quantify the achieved benefits in terms of production increase. The latter fact is due to the limited involvement of petroleum engineering and reservoir simulation in the preliminary data acquisition, processing and interpretation. This workshop aims to define the state-of-the-art in this integration process, highlighting current weaknesses and discussing what we need to develop further.

Papers will include topics of reservoir simulation of different scenarios based on different data availability as a validation tool and feedback for further tuning. In this way, one can 'close the loop' and build a shared Earth model fully populated by different parameters (Vp, Vs, density, porosity, permeability, fluid saturation, resistivity, pore pressure, stress conditions, etc.). These parameters are linked by physical laws and must reflect the joint work of geoscientists and engineers. In addition, case histories showing the synergies between several different investigation methods would be welcome.

A Special Session is planned about fresh water in the near-surface; along the same guidelines as for the deeper targets mentioned above, since some aspect of fluid propagation in fractured or porous rocks share similarities in the two cases.

Technical Program

For this EAGE / SEG Summer Research Workshop, a technical program will be designed consisting of Oral and Poster presentations. Paper topics will include geosciences, engineering, CO2 sequestration, and hydrology.

Contributions so far include papers from and on the subject of:

  • Rock Phsics, Reservoir sim: & 3+4D Seismic - Professor A. Nur ( Stanford University)
  • Upscaling of Reservoir model to Seismic frequencies - Professor A. Stovas (NTNU) & Y. Roganov (USGPI)
  • Using Artificial Neural Network for Predicting Water Saturation in an Iranian Oil Reservoir- Mr. K. Kamalyar

Workshop venue

Trieste, Italy has been chosen to host the EAGE / SEG Summer Research Workshop 2011. The workshop will take place from 1- 2 September 2011. Please note these are different dates than originally planned and advertised.

Savoia Excelsior Hotel
Riva Dei Mandracchio 4
Trieste Italy

Starhotels Savoia Excelsior Palace is a luxurious 4-star hotel situated in the centre of Trieste, in front of Palazzo dei Congressi, the city's main conference centre. This exclusive hotel, offering ultra-modern accommodation, was completely refurbished in 2009.

Please ensure you book before 15 June 2011 to guarantee the discounted Conference rate.

Meeting Format

Both invited and contributed papers are expected to introduce the state-of-the-art and the most recent advances. Plenty of time will be allocated for discussions, both in the general meeting and in the working groups. Round tables will be arranged with assigned seating to balance the presence of all the different players within each discussion group: geologists, geophysicists, petroleum and environmental engineers. Chatham house rules will apply. All participants are expected to contribute fully to all aspects of the workshop.

Who should attend

Practitioners and researchers in exploration, production and seismic; petroleum and reservoir engineers from the oil and gas industry, academia or contractors are welcome. The workshop is also relevant to technical experts and stakeholders in CO2 sequestration and seasonal gas storage; and near-surface scientists and professionals involved in freshwater production and protection. The workshop is open to all professionals whose primary discipline may be geology, geophysics or reservoir engineering, but have a keen interest in integrating these domains.
