GEM Beijing 2011 - Post-Meeting ReviewAn SEG/CGS Workshop on Gravity, Electrical and Magnetic Methods and Their Applications By Xiong Li and Yaoguo Li
GEM Beijing 2011, co-organized by SEG and CGS (the Chinese Geophysical Society), was held in Beijing, China on 10-13 October, 2011. The Workshop was a great success, thanks to contributions of the two professional societies, the local host (China University of Geosciences at Beijing, CUGB), authors, participants, sponsors, and many volunteers. GEM Beijing 2011 was the first such workshop to be held in China in recent years. It covered a broad range of topics on gravity, electrical, electromagnetic, and magnetic methods and their applications in exploration for oil and gas, minerals, and geothermal resources, as well as in geotechnical and environmental problems. The workshop featured 2 SEG Honorary Lectures, 4 keynote presentations, 67 contributed oral presentations, and 24 poster presentations. The 250 delegates at the Workshop represented 17 countries around the globe: Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Iran, Kuwait, Malaysia, Peru, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States. The Workshop provided networking opportunities for geophysicists from China and overseas. Ten members of the SEG Student Chapter at CUGB served as volunteers at the Workshop. The student volunteers provided the much needed logistical support in many different aspects during the Workshop. Their contribution was essential to the success of the Workshop. In addition to technical sessions, the Workshop was highlighted by the banquet night. Complementing the delicious food, delegates enjoyed many traditional Chinese performances: ethnic dance, folk music, Beijing opera, magic show, Kung Fu tea, rolling lamps acrobatics, and Sichuan opera face-changing. SEG's Digital Library recently launched the Global Meeting Abstracts catalog. GEM Beijing 2011 is one of the first SEG events other than the annual meetings that will use this catalog as a repository of the abstracts. 38 speakers have also kindly agreed to release their presentation files. These PPT files or their PDF versions will also be available from the same catalog. More photos from this Workshop will be available on the Workshop webpage hosted at Colorado School of Mines: http://geophysics.mines.edu/cgem/gem2011.html.
