| Sponsors | 2012 SEG/EAGE Summer Research Workshop Velocity Model Building in Complex Geology SOLD OUT: This workshop has reached its capacity. To be added to the waiting list, please contact awatson@seg.org. 13–17 August 2012 Charleston, South Carolina, USA Important Dates: 26 April 2012 - Abstract and application submission deadline extended 11 July 2012 - Advance registration deadline 18 July 2012 - Housing reservation deadline The continual growth in raw computing power is enabling geophysicists to devise imaging algorithms that better approximate the physics of wave propagation in the Earth. Acoustic Reverse Time Migration is now routinely used to produce more accurate subsurface images. Other imaging techniques, such as beam migrations are also heavily used. Researchers are experimenting with elastic RTM, at least in 2D. A critical input to these algorithms is an accurate subsurface velocity model. This workshop addresses velocity model building in complex geology as it is practiced today and as it will be practiced in the future. We therefore welcome submissions of papers covering theoretical developments and case histories within the broad topic of building a velocity model in complex geology, including: - Full waveform inversion
- Wave Equation Migration Velocity Analysis
- Velocity model building based on picking
- Velocity model building for multi-component data
- Velocity model building in poorly illuminated/noisy areas
- Velocity model building for complex near-surface and/or land data
- Velocity model building in presence of anisotropy and attenuation
- Importance of long offsets and low frequencies
- Quantification of model uncertainty
- Model suitability for imaging and/or applications
Workshop process - The committee will review applications and papers to determine acceptance.
- If you have been accepted you will be notified by 30 May.
- Once you have been accepted you will receive registration and housing information by e-mail.
- Register and pay the fee to attend the workshop.

After 11 July 2012, the price increases to US$755. A limited number of reduced student registrations will be available on a first-come, first-served basis with preference given to students giving a presentation. Reduced student registration rates will be set and distributed when registration opens.
- Hotel: Hotel rooms have been reserved at The Charleston Place Hotel at a rate of USD $159 per night plus tax. Rates are subject to a $1.00 destination marketing fee. To reserve your room, call 1-800-831-3490 or email groupres@charlestonplace.com and identify yourself as being with the SEG meeting to get the group rate. Reservation requests must be made by 18 July 2012 in order to qualify for the group rate. A first night's deposit must be guaranteed via a major credit card, which will be charged if the reservation is cancelled less than 72 hours prior to arrival.
- Meeting Format: The meeting will comprise a selection of oral and poster presentations. Experience of previous workshops is that discussion sessions are lively and wide-ranging: the proportion of delegates that actively participate is always high.
- Location: The meeting will be held at The Charleston Place Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina, USA.
- Schedule:
-Monday, 13 August — Registration Check-In and Ice Breaker Reception -Tuesday, 14 August – Friday, 17 August –Two full-day sessions Tuesday and Thursday with morning and afternoon sessions, and a half-day session Wednesday and Friday mornings. Wednesday afternoon will remain open for attendees to explore the area. The workshop will conclude following the Friday morning session. - Acceptance: An oral presentation is not a requirement in order to be accepted for registration; however, direct participation is required by all attendees through discussion. This will be enforced at the workshop. If the number of applicants exceeds the capacity of the conference facilities, then preference will be given to presenters. Capacity for this workshop is 100 participants.
Visa information invitation letters Participants in the Summer Research Workshop may generate an official invitation letter using the form below. This form will generate a letter which you can print and use in obtaining a visa. For those whose company or organization is planning on sending more than one individual to the workshop, additional documentation may be required for scheduling an appointment with the local American embassy. If additional assistance is required, fill out a separate invitation letter for each individual requesting a visa using the form below. Each invitation letter has a unique reference number. Produce one cover letter listing all individuals requesting a visa. The letter must include the following information for each individual: - name
- passport number
- date and place of birth
- nationality as it appears on the passport
- reference number from the invitation letter
Fax these forms together with the cover letter printed on the group's official stationery to +1.918.497.5557, attention Visa Letter Assistance. Please note that this letter does not guarantee that you will be granted a visa, nor does it commit SEG to pay any expenses you may incur. It is the sole responsibility of the attendee to obtain the necessary paperwork for entry to the United States. If you have any questions about this form or the letter it generates, please send us an e-mail.
