Frequently Asked Questions

Annual Meeting Expanded Abstracts

On preparing and submitting an abstract

How do I submit an abstract?

The Abstract Kit contains all instruction for submitting an abstract. Abstract Kits can be downloaded from the Annual Meeting Technical Program page beginning in mid-December of each year.

May I submit my abstract if permissions are still pending?

No, the transfer of copyright stipulates that authors have "… secured permission for the use of all materials from a copyrighted source and all illustrations and photographs used in the Work." Authors also warrant that they are empowered to transfer publication rights to SEG and that the work "… does not infringe any copyright or invade any right or privacy or publicity."

It causes the Technical Program Committee and SEG great difficulty if an expanded abstract must be withdrawn after it has been accepted and scheduled for presentation and publication. So, if you have not obtained all needed permissions by the submission deadline, please refrain from submitting an expanded abstract.

How do I format my references?

Please refer to the Instructions to Authors for reference guidelines. SEG asks that you follow these guidelines completely.

Why is it important that my references are formatted according to SEG style?

It is important that references are styled correctly so that they can be linked in SEG's Digital Library.

Will my abstract be reviewed and who will review my abstract?

All abstracts are reviewed; the Technical Program Chairman selects members of the Technical Program Committee and assigns each member to a topic area. That Technical Program committee member will then review the subject's abstract, along with three other reviewers assigned by that committee member.

When will I be notified of the status of my submitted abstract?

The contact author will be notified of the abstract's status via e-mail and postal mail 3-4 months after the submission deadline.

About transfer of copyright

May I present my abstract at other conferences after the SEG Annual Meeting? (If so, which ones?)

You may present your work at any venue after presenting it at the SEG Annual Meeting so long as you provide proper acknowledgment of SEG copyright ownership and current publication status.

The only exception is if you are presenting your work to a very small audience differing from the typical attendees of the SEG Technical Program, and you have obtained permission in writing, in advance, from the SEG Technical Program Committee chair.

May I publish my abstract in non-SEG publications?

You have the right to reproduce or authorize the reproduction or republication of your expanded abstract or portions thereof by any party for any purpose, with proper copyright acknowledgment; SEG also has this right. SEG asks that if you wish to expand your abstract into a full technical article that you submit this work to Geophysics or The Leading Edge. If you are considering this path for your work, you are encouraged to prepare your technical article and submit it soon after expanded abstract submission, while the work is still fresh in your mind and in your computer.

May I publish my abstract prior to the Annual Meeting?

Prior to the Annual Meeting, you may publish your expanded abstract only as an European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers extended abstract.

The only exception is if you are publishing your work in a publication distributed to a small audience differing from the typical audience that consumes SEG Technical Program content and you have obtained permission in writing in advance from the SEG Technical Program Committee chair.
