Frequently Asked QuestionsSEAM
What does SEAM stand for? SEG Advanced Modeling Corporation.
What is SEAM? SEAM is a collaborative effort between industry partners and the SEG Advanced Modeling Corporation ("SEAM"). SEAM is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the global organization dedicated to advancing the science and technology of applied geophysics. The SEAM mission is to advance the science and technology of applied geophysics through a cooperative industry effort focused on subsurface model construction and generation of synthetic data sets for geophysical problems of importance to the resource extraction industry.
What is the purpose of SEAM? The primary goals of SEAM are to design and generate synthetic model 3D and 2D seismic data, share the high cost effort of substantial model design and generation, provide a forum to discuss geophysical problems of interest, advance the art of modeling and computation and to provide data sets for industry benchmarks and educational purposes.
What are SEAM Phases? SEAM will proceed in phases anticipated to last approximately two to three years each. Each phase will define and deliver a synthetic model and data set(s) of relevance to one or more current geophysical challenges. The model data set may represent a refinement of the deliverables from a previous phase, or may be unrelated to previous SEAM phases. SEAM participants will define the technical details of the model to be created in each phase. SEAM Phase I commenced on 1 March 2007, and SEAM Phase II commenced on January 1, 2011.

What is the cost of SEAM? Participants pay an annual fee for each phase of the program. These fees provide the funds needed to progress technology development activities. Participants are represented on SEAM, to join, participants enter into a SEAM membership agreement which outlines the terms and conditions of their membership in the consortium, including the amount of the annual fees. Technical Committees are expected to contribute prior knowledge and expertise where appropriate to progress the goals of the current phase.
Is there a late entry fee to join SEAM? Late participants in will be charged an additional late entry fee of which is set in the membership agreement for each phase.
Will the SEAM data be available to the public? After an initial two years of confidentiality, Data sets will enter the public domain and will be available through SEG.
