CPS/SEG 2014 Beijing International Geophysical Conference & Exposition

The CPS/SEG 2014 Beijing International Geophysical Conference & Exposition, co-organized by Chinese Petroleum Society (CPS) and Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), took place at the Beijing International Convention Center (BICC) from 21-24 April 2014 and was a resounding success. Over 1,150 attendees of conference delegates, exhibition delegates, students and VIPs attended from 14 countries and regions; the exposition covering 6,000 square-meters space accommodated 59 companies including around 18 exhibitors of overseas registrations and local registrations by IOCs Office; and 334 papers (238 oral presentations + 96 e-posters) were featured in the technical sessions.

The conference's theme of Advancing Geophysical Innovation proved to be an excellent platform for the attendees to exchange their ideas of leading-edge exploration and development technologies around the globe, all while presenting a prime opportunity to connect with industry peers and experts. The technical content of the program on 22-24 April offered five parallel oral sessions and four e-poster sessions each day, addressing hot topics, innovations, and advancements in the geophysical field.

Aside from Technical Sessions, the conference featured a robust series of event highlights including the Borehole Seismic Workshop, Road Ahead Technical Session, Summit Forum, SEG Challenge Bowl and SEG Presidential Talk.

  • The Borehole Seismic Workshop was held on the afternoon of 20 April, as a great prelude before the conference officially began. Eight talks delivered by the experts from NOCs and IOCs were given during the workshop and it has attracted about 60 attendees.
  • On the morning of 21 April, the Road Ahead Technical Session took place and six speakers shared their insights in the advances of geophysical technologies. The form was co-chaired by Dr. Alfred Liaw, and Mr. Huimin Hao, both as co-chairs of the Conference Technical Committee.
  • Later in the afternoon, the Opening Ceremony got underway with the welcome remarks of senior leaders from CNPC, Sinopec, CNOOC, CPS, and SEG. Dr. Christopher Liner, the SEG President-Elect, represented SEG to welcome all the delegates and thank the great support of the companies and attendees in China and from other regions for making the conference happen. The Summit Forum followed, co-chaired by BGP President Wang and Dr. Liner. Six senior management leaders from world-renowned oil companies shared their visions on geophysical development.
  • Along with the conference, the SEG Challenge Bowl was held on 23 April. Ten teams from Chinese Student Chapters participated in the contest with emcee Dr. Peter Duncan. After a one-hour intensive but fun competition, the team from University of Science and Technology China topped other teams and took the title. The winners will attend the Challenge Bowl finals at SEG Denver 2014. Afterwards, Dr. Liner gave a SEG Presidential Talk entitled Time and Frequency that perfectly concluded the student event on that day.

Thanks to all the generous sponsors including ConocoPhillips, Paradigm, Sercel, PGS, Aroundwave Software, PEGETE Group, and GeoSystem, the conference was a big success. Conferences of this type will be sponsored by CPS and SEG every four years and we will look forward to the next one in 2018!
