dGB Earth Sciences and ARK CLS launch OpendTect connector plug-in for Petrel software

16 May 2011—dGB Earth Sciences and ARK CLS announced a direct data link between dGB’s OpendTect software and the Petrel seismic to simulation software.

The OpendTect connector plug-in for Petrel software, developed by ARK CLS using the Ocean software development framework, will provide the Petrel user community with access to OpendTect’s plug-ins relating to areas such as attribute and processing analysis, sequence stratigraphy, fluid migration, rock property predictions, and velocity modeling.

3D horizons, including time/depth horizons, and high-quality attribute volumes generated by OpendTect, can all be incorporated into Petrel software, enabling users to build robust reservoir models, maximize their geological data, and bridge the gap between seismic quantitative interpretation and more production-focused reservoir models.

In all cases, interpreters will be able to seamlessly export and import seismic data between the Petrel workflow manager and OpendTect with no need to move separate SEG-Y files back and forth between applications as was done previously.

Seismic interpreters will also be able to use Petrel software to access OpendTect’s latest plug-in, HorizonCube, significantly increasing the number and density of mapped horizons and resulting in improved low frequency model building, more accurate inversion results, and geologically sound rock-property predictions.

Schlumberger releases latest version of its wellbore software platform

16 May 2011—Schlumberger announced the release of Techlog 2011 software, which delivers a next generation application interface and expansion of customization capabilities.

The new pore pressure prediction module incorporates industry standard methods to compute the pore pressure and fracture gradients and establish the safe mud weight window to ensure safe drilling operations. The 2011 release also sees the full implementation of GeoFrame ELAN functionality in Techlog, augmenting the existing mineral solver capabilities with the proven algorithms from this industry-recognized application. Other advanced applications such as NMR and wellbore imaging received significant upgrades in this release.

The 2011 release delivers a complete modernization of the application interface. The new ribbon interface combines intuitive icons with complete customization capability—to bring clarity and knowledge sharing directly into the application.  A key innovation in usability, the convenient dashboard mode supports automatic window tiling to maximize the workspace and reduce mouse movements. Furthermore, an intelligent right-mouse-click in context brings frequently used tools and actions directly to the users’ fingertips.

The workflow interface enables users to create comprehensive cross-domain analysis workflows that are applicable across single or multiple wells with equal ease. Workflows can be saved and shared as templates, edited and re-applied to new data facilitating consistency, ease of use and efficient sharing of expertise across asset teams.

Robert H. Dott, Jr. awarded Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist Medal

17 May 2011—The American Geological Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce Robert H. Dott, Jr., Professor Emeritus, Department of Geoscience of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as the recipient of the 2011 Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist Medal. Established in 1999, the award is presented to a geoscientist who has demonstrated a long history of scientific achievement and exceptional service to the geoscience profession.

Dott received his BS and MS from the University of Michigan in 1950 and 1951 respectively and his PhD from Columbia University in 1956. His career began at the Humble Oil and Refining Company in Arizona, Oregon, Washington and California.

After working in the petroleum industry, Dott started as assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He rose to full professor and was named the Stanley A. Tyler Distinguished Professor. He retired in 1994. During his teaching career, he directed (or codirected) 58 completed Masters and PhD theses leaving a legacy of well-trained geoscience professionals in academia, government and industry. Notably, Dott is co-author of the text Evolution of the Earth now in its eighth edition.

Dott has served the geoscience community. Among his many leadership roles, he has served as President (1981–82) of SEPM, president of the History of Earth Science Society (1990), and associate editor of Geology (1974–1982) and the Journal of Sedimentary Petrology (1978–1981). He has also been on the Geological Society of American Nominating Committee (1972, 1977), the U.S. National Committee on Geology of the National Academy of Sciences (1982–1986) and served as chairman for the U.S. Committee on the History of Geology for the National Research Council (1981–1983).

Throughout Dott's career, he has been honored with several awards including the Distinguished Service Award of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (1984), SEPM Excellence of Presentation Award (1984), was named an SEPM Honorary Member (1987), been awarded the Ben H. Parker Medal by the American Institute of Professional Geologists (1992), the W.H. Twenhofel Medal by SEPM (1993), the History of Geology Award (1995) and the Sloss Award (2001) by the Geological Society of America.
