ANNOUNCEMENT! Global Membership integrated into Associate Member type

We are pleased to announce that the SEG Council, at its 9 November 2008 meeting in Las Vegas, NV USA, approved a joint Membership and Executive Committee recommendation to amend the SEG Constitution and Bylaws thereby reducing the number of individual membership options to three member types (Active, Associate, and Student). In accordance with SEG policy, the amendment was submitted to a vote and was confirmed by the voting members of the Society on 10 February 2009.

Effective 10 February 2009, Global Membership was integrated into the Associate Membership type. SEG Global Members who are a citizen of and reside in a developing nation as defined by the World Bank and their membership records will be transferred to the Associate Member type and billed at the lowest-tier dues rate of US$12 according to the SEG three-tiered dues structure. These new Associate Members will continue to receive the same membership benefits previously enjoyed as Global Members, including access to online journals via the SEG Digital Library.

These are exciting times for the Society, and removing the distinction between virtually identical types of membership is just another step toward building and becoming a truly global organization of exploration geophysicists. We look forward to your continued membership and support of SEG.

Frequently asked questions

When will this change begin?

The change is effective beginning with the 2009 membership year. The SEG business office will mail revised dues statements to facilitate this conversion.

Why was the decision made to change the membership structure?

SEG’s expanding global membership is reflected in increased operating costs for the Society. In an effort to carefully contain these rising expenditures and still proceed with plans to broaden the Society’s membership benefit offering and global initiatives, SEG realized that reducing the number of individual membership options to three member types would result in many administrative, marketing, and membership efficiencies, specifically in regards to the Global and Associate membership, which are virtually identical and receive the same member benefits.

Is financial assistance available?

To help Global Members transition to the new fees, the SEG Executive Committee has approved a one-time offer to allow Global Members to request a waiver of their Associate Member dues for the 2009 membership year.

Please see program eligibility and guidelines below.

SEG welcomes and will consider every request; however, please note that assistance is limited for the 2009 membership year due to availability of funds, and the offer is extended to previous Global Members only.

All 2009 dues-waiver requests must be received by the SEG business office on or before 30 September 2009.
