2012 SEG Middle East DISC reaches 155 professionals across the region2012 SEG Distinguished Instructor Short Course, conducted from 9-16 December in the Middle East region (UAE, Oman & KSA), was very well received by the geophysicists from national oil companies, service contractors and students. The SEG DISC, now in its 14th year, is presented at over 25 locations each year around the world. The DISC Course in the Middle East was sponsored by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), CGGVeritas, Dhahran Geoscience Society (DGS), Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), and WesternGeco. The one-day course, Elements of Seismic Dispersion: A somewhat practical guide to frequency-dependent phenomena, presented by Christopher Liner, was attended by 155 high-ranking professionals and 33 students from various constituencies; Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) - GOLD Sponsor, Abu Dhabi Company For Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO), Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA), Arabian Geophysical and Surveying Company (ARGAS), CGGVeritas – SILVER Sponsor, Crescent Petroleum, Dhahran Geoscience Society (DGS) - GOLD Sponsor, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), United Arab Emirates University, Occidental of Oman, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) - HOST in Oman, Sultan Qaboos University, Saudi Aramco, The Petroleum Institute, WesternGeco – SILVER Sponsor, Zakum Development Company (ZADCO). Hiroshi Hagiwara, Advisor Geophysics – ADNOC said "It was an excellent opportunity for me to have deeper aspects of continuing professional education of seismic elements. During the course, Chris covered somewhat complicated seismic dispersion elements in a comfortable manner by illustrating them with examples and case histories, and indeed he explained fundamental difference of intrinsic and apparent dispersion phenomena from new and value adding perspectives. I'd like to thank Chris and SEG for providing such a special course in Abu Dhabi to make us more special. You ‘truly' helped us adding amazing values for our continuing self-development." "Dr. Liner ably managed in this course to once and for all make the ultimate mathematical and practical illusive link between dispersion, frequency, phase, velocity, amplitude and attenuation. With his profound insight on the subject, he made us feel as if we were literally riding a dispersive guided wave and getting attenuated with increased velocities and diminished frequencies," Ghiath Ajlani, VP-Senior Area Geophysicist – CGGVeritas, commented. The Distinguished Instructor Short Course is the primary course offered by Society of Exploration Geophysicist (SEG) to foster significant and constructive interaction amongst instructor, professionals and students.
