SEG Challenge Bowl Regional Competitions

Latin America Challenge Bowl

Cartagena, Colombia
7 February 2008

The first Latin America Challenge Bowl was held in conjunction with the International Congress of Conventional and Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources in Cartagena. The event attracted eight teams from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. At the end the Venezuelan team was in first place won the competition. The winners were Lorena Suarez and Luis Bravo of Simon Bolivar University.

2nd Annual Middle-East Challenge Bowl

Manama, Bahrain
4 March 2008

The 2nd Annual Middle-East Challenge Bowl was held in conjunction with GEO 2008 in Manama, Bahrain. Eight teams, consisting of two students each from GCC universities, competed in the Challenge Bowl. The winners were Khalid Ali Mubarak Obaid and Ahmed Sabed Khamis Al Kaabi of the Petroleum Institute in Dubai.

2nd Annual Sooner Challenge Bowl

Norman, Oklahoma
14 March 2008

The 2nd Annual Sooner Challenge Bowl was held at the University of Oklahoma in conjunction with the AAPG/SEG Student Expo. Eight teams competed (University of Oklahoma, University of Houston, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at El Paso, Florida State University, Purdue University, Texas A.M). A team from University of Houston composed of Aslan Gassiyev and Grigoriy Perov won first place in this event.

China Challenge Bowl

Beijing, China
3 April 2008

The first ever China Challenge Bowl was held in conjunction with the SEG Beijing Spotlight. Seven teams representing six SEG Student Sections participated in the competition. After one and a half hour of furious competition, the team from the China University of Geosciences (Beijing) emerged to win. The winners were Guo Lianghui and Liu Enhua.

2nd Annual Gulf Coast Challenge Bowl

Houston, Texas
18 April 2008

The 2nd Annual Gulf Coast Challenge Bowl was held in Houston in conjunction with Sercel's 4th Annual Land Forum. Three teams participated (University of Houston, Rice University) in the competition. The winners were Geoffrey Chambers and Hobart Young of Rice University.

All regional winners will receive an all expense paid trip to the SEG Annual meeting in Las Vegas, where they will compete in the 3rd Annual SEG Challenge Bowl and have the chance to win valuable cash prizes.
