2008 AAPG/SEG Spring Student Expo Recap

For eight years the ConocoPhillips School of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma has hosted the AAPG/SEG Spring Break Student Expo. This year's Expo, held 13-15 March attracted 211 students, representing 52 different universities and 33 company sponsors. The Expo gave students a chance to get face time with recruiters from all aspects of the business ranging from the majors to the independents in a relaxed setting.

In addition to interviewing and networking opportunities, the Expo also offered four educational sessions and two field trips.

Educational sessions

"3D Seismic Stratigraphy and Seismic Geomorphology
"Carbonate Stratigraphy in Petroleum Exploration and Field Development
"The Potential for the Big Bucks$$$....An Independent Geologist’s Perspective
"Schlumberger Geosciences—A Technology Overview

Field trips

One-day field trip to the Wichita Mountains
Rig tour

Educational sessions and field trips give students a chance for exposure to the concepts needed for a successful career in the geophysics field.

Each year the Expo holds a technical poster contest, this year yielding 52 student entrants. Students not only had the chance to win, but they could also present a poster. The poster is used to communicate the skills students can bring to a potential employer as well as communicate their technical knowledge and the results of their work. As in past years, the posters were amazing, and the judges had a difficult time deciding the winners.

For the second time the Expo hosted the regional SEG Challenge Bowl. The team from the University of Houston composed of Aslan Gassiyev and Grigoriy Perov won first place in this event and will go on to contend in the Finals held at the SEG Annual Meeting 9–14 November in Las Vegas.

The next AAPG/SEG Student Expo will be held 8-9 October in Houston, Texas.
