INTRODUCTION

GEOPHYSICS is not only one of the main peer-reviewed journals for applied geophysicists, it appears also to be highly appreciated by many geoscientists in related fields. Whenever I talk with colleagues from other geo-disciplines about our journal, my experience is that they not only know GEOPHYSICS, but also that they consider it to be one of the top journals in geoscience. Unfortunately, this appreciation usually gets undermined when the discussion turns to impact factors. In the rat race of citation analyses and impact factors, GEOPHYSICS scores only as an average geoscience journal. Is there an explanation for this discrepancy between the subjective and apparent high appreciation for our journal and the “objective” modest impact factor? Should we worry about it?
