2013 NSGS Election

Steve Sloan

Candidate for NSGS President-Elect

Biography

Steve SloanSteve Sloan is a Senior Research Geophysicist with XRI Geophysics in Vicksburg, Mississippi, specializing in near- surface seismology, including high-resolution shallow seismic reflection, refraction tomography, and surface wave methods. His research has focused on developing and applying geophysical methods to defense problems, including clandestine tunnel detection, counter improvised explosive device (C-IED) applications, and geophysical characterization of the shallow subsurface in austere environments.

Steve received a BS in geology from Millsaps College (2003), and an MS (2005) and PhD (2008) in geophysics from The University of Kansas. He previously spent several years as a Research Geophysicist with the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center. He has authored or co-authored over 50 technical publications related to near- surface geophysics. Steve has been a member of SEG and NSGS since 2003 and currently serves on the Committee on University and Student Programs, the Field Camps Committee (SEG Foundation), and was the SEG representative on the 2013 SAGEEP Technical Committee. He is a member of SEG, EEGS, AGU, and EAGE.

Position Statement

The NSGS has made tremendous strides in recent years with increased membership and visibility within SEG as a whole and in return is receiving much more support, both financially and via a near-surface focused program manager, from SEG. Great things are happening right now in the near-surface geophysics community, including the potential merger of the NSGS and EEGS, the second NS Honorary Lecturer, and the first Near Surface Geophysics Asia Pacific Conference held in China this summer.

I am honored to be considered for the position of President-Elect of the Near Surface Geophysics Section. If elected, I hope to:

  • Continue to grow the standing that the NSGS has earned within SEG
  • Increase the student membership and outreach to ensure a continued active and energetic membership base in the future
  • Continue to improve communication and foster collaboration within the international near-surface community of geoscientists and engineers.

I look forward to the potential opportunity to serve our membership and the SEG.
