Approved Amendments to the Constitution
The following amendments to the SEG Constitution which were approved and recommended for adoption by the SEG Council at its meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada on 9 November 2008 have been approved by vote of Active Members of the Society in good standing. The amended Constitution will be published in the SEG May 2009 Yearbook. Proposed amendments to the SEG Bylaws which followed from a change in the Constitution became effective upon approval of the Constitutional change by the Active Members of the Society.
The approved amendments are presented in three parts. Additions are shown in bold, underlined type and deletions by strikethrough.
PART I – JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP
Proposal: The following changes to the SEG Constitution were approved to allow incorporation of a new class of membership called Junior Membership, for students not yet eligible for Student Membership but clearly interested in the geosciences. Junior Membership is intended to encourage pre-college students to become involved and consider a career in the geosciences, particularly geophysics.
Article III. Membership
Section 2. The Membership of this Society shall consist of Honorary Members, Life Members, Active Members, Emeritus Members, Associate Members, Student Members, Junior Members, Corporate Members, and Global Members.
Sections 9 to 13 will be renumbered as Sections 10 to 14. A new Section 9 will be added.
Section 9. To be eligible for Junior Membership, an applicant must be recommended by a teacher, mentor, or professional geoscientist and must show interest in geosciences by either enrollment in an advanced level geosciences course, by volunteering at a museum, educational institution, or other appropriate facility, or by instructing others in geosciences such as at a camp, Boy Scout or Girl Scout program, or in similar situations where the applicant’s interest in geoscience has been demonstrated. Junior Membership is designed to encourage those in pre-college education and not yet eligible for Student Membership but interested in geosciences, and is not intended to be overly restrictive.
Section 15. Junior Members shall be entitled to attend the meetings of the Society under appropriate supervision, to purchase its publications on the same terms as Student Members, and to have electronic access to SEG's services, products, and journals. Junior Membership shall not include printed copies of SEG journals. Junior Members shall have no other privileges of membership and in publishing their affiliation with the Society shall clearly indicate their grade of membership.
PART II – STUDENT SECTIONS
Proposal: The following amendments to the SEG Constitution were approved to change the name of SEG “Student Sections” to “Student Chapters”.
Article XII. Student Sections Chapters
Section 1. In keeping with the objectives of this Society, the formation of Student Sections Chapters at recognized colleges or universities shall be encouraged by the Executive Committee.
PART III – GLOBAL MEMBERSHIP
Proposal: The following changes to the Constitution were approved to eliminate Global Membership. SEG members who are a citizen of and reside in a country designated as an SEG Global country and currently have their dues sponsored under the Global Membership Sponsorship program will automatically be transferred to Associate Members and billed at the lowest tiered dues rate.
Article III. Membership
Section 2. The Membership of this Society shall consist of Honorary Members, Life Members, Active Members, Emeritus Members, Associate Members, Student Members, and Corporate Members and Global Members.
Section 10. To be eligible for election in the Global Membership, an applicant must be actively interested in geophysics and a citizen and resident of an SEG-designated Global Country.
Section 13. Global Members shall be entitled to attend the meetings of the Society, to purchase its publications on the same terms as Active Members, and to have electronic access to SEG's services, products, and journals. Global Membership shall not include printed copies of SEG journals. Global Members shall have no other privileges of membership and in publishing their affiliation with the Society shall clearly indicate their grade of membership.
