SEG Board of Directors introduces
Outstanding Educator Award
The SEG Board of Directors has approved the instatement of a new Award Category, the Outstanding Educator Award, which will honor individuals for excellence in geophysics education. The new award was proposed by the SEG's Women's Network Committee, observing that the SEG did not have an award in place that explicitly rewards educational contributions in the field of geophysics.
Currently, SEG's student member population is larger than ever, and our field is facing the big crew change. A strong focus on education is especially important in these times. Through this award, the SEG membership has the opportunity to recognize the important role that educators play in advancing geophysics and creating and advancing geophysicists. They are and have been a source of inspiration to many SEG members, and contribute selflessly to the growth of our profession.
Individuals may be considered for the award based on their educational qualities and contributions that may include:
- Outstanding contributions in teaching geophysics classes at any educational level
- Impact on education programs by commitment to excellence in geophysics education
- Special dedication to advising, supervising, and mentoring students
- Providing extraordinary inspiration to the next generation of geophysics professionals
SEG members are invited to submit nominations, with letters of support, to the Honors and Awards Committee, at honorsandawards@seg.org, or by mail to SEG Honors and Awards Committee, c/o SEG Business Office/Cindy Blackshear, P. O. Box 702740, Tulsa, OK 74170-2740, USA. Please submit all nominations by 1 January 2014.
