Geophysics call for papers: Velocity Estimation for Depth Imaging

SEG invites papers on the topic of "Velocity Estimation for Depth Imaging" for publication in an upcoming special section or issue of Geophysics.

In the last decade, exploration and reservoir delineation have greatly benefited from explosive progress in 3D seismic depth imaging. This has led to increasing attention to the quality and accuracy of the velocity models that make these images possible; thus, it is time to review methods of estimating and updating velocity models and explore new directions for the future.

For this comprehensive survey of the topic, Geophysics invites summaries of existing practices, descriptions of new approaches, and case studies that illustrate the practical aspects of building and updating velocity models.

Appropriate topics include methodologies such as migration velocity analysis, waveform tomography or wave-equation inversion; the estimation and application of medium properties to depth imaging, such as complex velocities, anisotropy or Q; specific challenges such as subsalt and shallow gas; and other relevant and related topics. Especially welcome are case studies that integrate various approaches for updating velocities to improve depth images.

Interested authors should submit their manuscripts no later than 30 November 2007. In addition, the special issue/section editors would like to receive a provisional title and list of authors as soon as possible. Authors should submit via the normal online submission system for Geophysics (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/geophysics) and indicate that it is a contribution for the velocity estimation special section or issue. The submitted papers will undergo the regular peer review process and the contributing authors are also expected to participate as reviewers.

Given the tight timeline for publication of this issue, Geophysics is going to strictly enforce author submission guidelines, covered in "Instructions to Authors" published in the January-February 2007 issue and on the journal's Web site (http://seg.org/publications/geophysics/instructionstoa.shtml). Please note that normal Geophysics page and color charges apply.

For specific questions, please contact the special issue/section editors Bill Harlan (bharlan@lgc.com), Bob Langan (bob.langan@chevron.com) or Tamas Nemeth (tamas.nemeth@chevron.com).
