SEG part of the IPTC 2008

by Bastiaan Bouma, Director, Global Relations, SEG

The third International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) was operated by SPE with partner/society sponsorship roles by AAPG, EAGE, and SEG. The principal host organization and sponsor of the 2008 event was Petronas, Malaysia’s national oil company. Other corporate sponsors (28 in all) included additional principal sponsors ExxonMobil, Shell, and Murphy. Service company sponsors included Anadarko, Schlumberger, and Halliburton. The event was held 3–5 December 2008 at the KL Convention Center in downtown Kuala Lumpur—an excellent venue very proximate to hotels and well managed.

IPTC featured a full conference program; technical, panel and poster sessions, young professional workshops, luncheon events, and the like. A unique addition to this year’s IPTC was the creation of an “Environmental Pavilion” with selected speakers and displays pertaining to alternative and nonconventional energy solutions (including an assortment of electric vehicles—a very popular display). A number of student oriented events were also in evidence. SEG’s booth was located at a strategic location, adjacent to booths of the other three professional societies.

Overall, more than 5000 attendees visited the show floor, which featured about 90 exhibitors. More than 1200 individuals registered for the conference sessions. Of the 1057 abstracts submitted, 386 were accepted for the conference program. IPTC 2009 is scheduled for 7–9 December in Doha, Qatar.
