Business news for the week of 17 September 2008 Past news briefs Ascend Geo announces completion of field demonstration 28 August 2008—Ascend Geo advised that it had completed field demonstrations of the Ultra G5 Cable-free Land Seismic Acquisition System. The demonstrations were conducted in a real-time, full-cycle, data-recording operation. Approximately 65 oil company and contractor representatives visited the field test site near Devine, Texas, USA to view cable-free deployment and retrieval, live data recording, and real-time output of seismic data with the Ultra acquisition system. The demonstrations of the system were conducted with the cooperation of the University of Texas’ Bureau of Economic Geology, Exploration Geophysics Laboratory which provided the field site; AOA Geophysics, which supplied an advanced accelerated weight drop (AWD) source technology developed by United Service Alliance; and GEDCO, which provided the seismic data processing software, Vista. AGI announces Global Earth Science Week contest 17 September 2008—The American Geological Institute is sponsoring a new, fourth contest in conjunction with both Earth Science Week (12–18 October 2008) and The International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE). In addition to the photo, essay, and visual art contests offered each year as part of Earth Science Week, a new global photography contest, "Exploring Earth Science Around the World," has been developed. This competition is open to anyone, with images eligible from anywhere around the world—all in celebration of IYPE. Entrants are encouraged to submit images that highlight the beauty and power of the Earth’s processes. Pictures of landforms, bodies of water, weather, and more that depict the geosciences exploration and research that is occurring across the planet as part of IYPE are ideal. | | |
