Schlumberger and Chevron announce release of INTERSECT
5 October 2009—Schlumberger and Chevron Energy Technology Company announced the release of INTERSECT, a next generation reservoir simulation software which enables simulation of large complex reservoirs and highly heterogeneous systems. The technology is the result of extensive research collaboration and a joint development effort between the two companies beginning in 2000. The INTERSECT software will be released progressively. Early adopter customers will work closely with Schlumberger to apply this first commercial release to multiple reservoir challenges. Their experience will be used to further enhance the product for general release.

To provide open extensibility, future releases of INTERSECT will include Ocean development tools—enabling oil and gas companies, independent software providers, and universities to create plug-ins to customize simulation workflows for specific reservoir and recovery challenges.

Schlumberger will continue to develop and support the INTERSECT simulator and the industry-standard ECLIPSE reservoir simulator. Both simulators use Petrel Reservoir Engineering as a front end to simulation, integrating the static and dynamic modeling process.

Fugro-Jason releases PowerLog 3.1 petrophysics software
5 October 2009—Fugro-Jason announced PowerLog 3.1, the latest version of this petrophysical interpretation software, which add two new interactive modules.

The LSSA module provides a graphical view of isotropic and anisotropic thinly laminated sand-shale sequences. Built for use with Baker’s 3DEX multicomponent induction tool, LSSA partitions formations into sand and shale beds using the Thomas-Stieber model. Using Vsh, porosity, and resistivity plots with overlays, petrophysicists can graphically adjust interpretation parameters for easy visual feedback and QC of analysis results. PowerLog 3.1 will be available beginning 8 November 2009.

Schlumberger opens reservoir completions manufacturing center in Saudi Arabia
5 October 2009—Schlumberger announced the opening of the new reservoir completions manufacturing center in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The new center, located in the Dammam Industrial City represents an investment of approximately US$25M in state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, facility lease, and inventory. It houses a team of design and manufacturing engineers who specialize in the production of customized downhole reservoir completions equipment. The center provides a collaborative environment in which joint oil company and Schlumberger teams can develop and manufacture completions solutions for applications across the range of reservoir types found in the Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.

Manufacturing operations will begin with a number of products for immediate application in Saudi Arabia. These include single wire-wrapped screens with a unique shrink-fit design, inflow control devices for production wells, and injection control devices to control the profile of water injection wells.

The center is the first true manufacturing facility of its kind in Saudi Arabia. As part of the global Schlumberger technology organization, the center will draw on expertise and support from the company’s worldwide network of 20 research and engineering facilities in 12 countries. In addition, the nearby Schlumberger Dhahran Carbonate Research Center will be available to provide key technology insight and support.
