PanAmerican Geophysical announces the launch of their new company for land and well seismic services 1 August 2011—The merger agreement and acquisition of CGL Compañia Geofísica Latinoamerica S.A.S. (CGL), GeoStrata Resources, Inc., and UGA Seismic was announced on August 1. CGL, GeoStrata, and UGA Seismic will continue to operate under their own brands within their local markets. The newly formed group has its corporate headquarters in Jersey in the Channel Islands. A new regional operational headquarters in Brazil will be established in the coming weeks. PanAmerican will specialize in land and well seismic services with focused operations in key markets in North and South America. Mark Farine has been named chief executive officer. Farine, with 29 years experience in the seismic industry (two with Digicon, fifteen with Syntron, and twelve with Sercel), will focus on expanding PanAmerican's South American market, driving global marketing, and developing PanAmerican's international team to best serve the needs of its growing customer base. The merger with CGL, based in Bogotá, Colombia, GeoStrata based in Calgary, Canada and UGA Seismic based in Buenos Aires, Argentina immediately provides PanAmerican with the personnel and resources to deliver high-quality seismic services to customers throughout the Americas.
New TGS multiclient 3D survey in the Faroe-Shetland Basin 2 August 2011—TGS has commenced a new multiclient 3D survey in the Faroe-Shetland Basin. The survey covers 2,500 km2 west of the British Isles over quads 6004, 204, and 205 and is in partnership with PGS. The new seismic data is being acquired by the PGS Ramform Viking towing 12 x 6,000-m cables with 75-m separation and using PGS' GeoStreamer Technology. Data acquisition will continue through late 2011 and the vessel will return in 2012 to complete the survey. Data processing will be performed by both TGS and PGS.
Spectrum acquires CGGVeritas multiclient 2D marine library 3 August 2011—Spectrum announced an agreement to acquire the 2D multiclient library of CGGVeritas encompassing more than 500,000 km of seismic data. This significant increase in Spectrum's multiclient data library involves a US $40 million transaction. The combined size of Spectrum's library now exceeds 1 million km of 2D multiclient seismic and covers all major sedimentary basins worldwide. The newly acquired data complements Spectrum's existing library especially in key areas such as the Gulf of Mexico, South America, the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, and the North Sea. The combined 2D library, the second largest in the seismic marketplace, is suited to develop new products and for planning of new multiclient seismic surveys, both 2D and 3D. Reprocessing of several projects in the library is already underway both by CGGVeritas and Spectrum. CGGVeritas will become a major shareholder in Spectrum, holding a 25% stake and will have one member on the Spectrum board of Directors. Following the transaction, CGGVeritas will focus its 2D multiclient activity mainly through its shareholding in Spectrum.
Tom Smith of Geophysical Insights is elected SEG Foundation Chairman 4 August 2011—The SEG Foundation, the arm of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) responsible for funding and grant programs, announced the election of Tom Smith as board chairman. Smith was appointed to a three-year term on 1 January 2010 and was recently elected by the Board to serve as chairman for 2011. He joins Gary Servos, executive advisory vice-chair, and Jeff Springmeyer, treasurer, as officers of the Foundation.
Schlumberger introduces new high-temperature ESP System 4 August 2011—Schlumberger announced today the release of its third-generation REDA HotlineSA3 high-temperature electric submersible pump (ESP) system for steam-assisted recovery operations and geothermal applications. This latest release enables operators to further improve economics through increased recovery factors and early production while reducing downtime and intervention costs. Building on years of development and lessons learned from the REDA Hotline550 ESP system, the HotlineSA3 system incorporates an integrated design that extends the ESP operating envelope and run life. Integrated surveillance and control through reliable fluid pressure, temperature and internal motor temperature measurements help reduce sub-cool and Steam Oil Ratio (SOR).
WHOI study reports microbes consumed oil in gulf slick at unexpected rates 8 August 2011—In research published in the August 2 online edition of Environmental Research Letters, the WHOI team studied samples from the surface oil slick and surrounding Gulf waters. They found that bacterial microbes inside the slick degraded the oil at a rate five times faster than microbes outside the slick accounting in large part for the disappearance of the slick some three weeks after Deepwater Horizon's Macondo well was shut off. At the same time, the researchers observed no increase in the number of microbes inside the slick-something that would be expected as a byproduct of increased consumption, or respiration, of the oil. In this process, respiration combines food (oil in this case) and oxygen to create carbon dioxide and energy. The research was supported by RAPID grants from the National Science Foundation.
New AGU award recognizes excellence in climate communications 9 August 2011—Recognizing excellence in climate communications, as well as the promotion of scientific literacy, clarity of messaging, and efforts to foster respect and understanding for science-based values related to climate change, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) has announced the creation of a new award, the AGU Climate Communication Prize. As the world's largest organization of Earth and Space Scientists, AGU works promote discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. The prize, which recognizes an AGU member-scientist and which comes with a US $25,000 cash award, is being sponsored by Nature's Own, a Boulder, Colorado-based company which specializes in the sale of minerals, fossils, and decorative stone specimens. The annual award will be presented for the first time at AGU's 2011 Fall Meeting in San Francisco, 5–9 December.
