SEG transfers standards to OGP

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists has transferred custodianship of its positioning data exchange formats to the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (OGP), and OGP is seeking public comment to inform its revision processes for two of these standards by 15 April 2009.

SEG’s Technical Standards Committee recommended the SEG-P standards transfer in recognition of OGP’s leadership in positioning standards development and the need for SEG to focus on revisions to seismic data exchange formats. Positioning standards revisions are needed to address wireless, seabed/ocean-bottom, and multisource technologies.

Under procedures approved by the SEG Executive Committee in February, OGP shall post the standards on its Web site and make them available without access restrictions; SEG shall provide links from its Web site to the standards on OGP’s site; SEG will help publicize the launch of efforts to develop positioning standards or revise them but shall play no formal role in approving them; OGP shall brand the standards with its own name; and OGP shall provide a prominent link within its Web site to technical standards on SEG’s site. Under the agreement with OGP, SEG is transferring its intellectual property rights in the standards.

SEG standards transferred to OGP under the agreement are:

P1—Postplot Location Data Exchange Format

P2—Marine Positioning field Data Exchange Format

P3—Land Survey Field Data Exchange Format

P4—Doppler Satellite Field Data Exchange Format

OGP’s Surveying & Positioning Committee invites stakeholders to complete questionnaires regarding revisions to P1, P2, and P6 (seismic binning definition and format). The purpose is to establish the value that the surveying and positioning industry places on the standards revision initiatives. Questionnaire are linked below.

Responses should be e-mailed to Abigail Findlay by 15 April so that they may be collated in advance of an OGP Surveying & Positioning Committee meeting scheduled 23-24 April.
