Facts about SEG

SEG encourages its members to learn about the newest technologies by sponsoring speakers, publishing new theories in periodicals and other formats, and organizing continuing education classes around the world. Through SEG, members can network and learn from other professionals.

History

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the science of applied geophysics and the education of geophysicists. SEG, founded in 1930, fosters the expert and ethical practice of geophysics in the exploration and development of natural resources, in characterizing the near surface, and in mitigating earth hazards. The Society, which has more than 32,000 members (and growing) in 138 countries, representing 51 sections and associated societies in 31 countries, and 265 student chapters in 61 countries, fulfills its mission through its publications, conferences, forums, Web sites, and educational opportunities.

Annual Reports/Governance Documents

The Annual Report of the society is a document that contains reports from the officers, committee chairmen, and representatives of the Society, along with the financial report. As an organization SEG has standards, and regulations it follows to maintain its professional geophysical assistance. SEG Committees/Yearbook

Being a member-driven society, SEG's continued success depends on its standing and ad hoc committees (which total approximately 30 in most years). As part of SEG's global strategy, members may participate in most committee meetings from anywhere in the world if they have telephones, broadband Internet access, and a few extra hours to devote to deliberations. The Yearbook explains how the society is organized and how it grows. This information, along with a membership listing, awards, a staff directory, and volunteer lists, gives readers more knowledge about SEG.
