W-1: Use of Seismic Technology in Petroleum Resources Estimation and Classification SEG 2012 Annual Meeting Technical Program Date: Thursday, 8 November 2012 Time: 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm Location: Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Room: Mandalay Bay Ballroom B Organizers: Pierre-Louis Pichon, Marian Hanna, Rocky Roden, and Martin Karrenbach Through the support of the SEG Oil and Gas Reserve Committee Description Following the successful Reserves Workshop that was held at the 2010 and 2011 SEG Annual meeting, a yearly event proved to be useful for sharing best practices on the use of geophysical technology and workflows as part of the Petroleum Resources and Classification Process. Since the last 2011 workshop, the following events have occurred and will be discussed: - The Guidelines for Application of the Petroleum Resources Management System (PRMS-AG) was published 1 November 2011, and is available for downloading on the SPE website. The PRMS-AG is sponsored by the SPE, AAPG, WPC, SPEE and SEG. A chapter, specifically addressing seismic applications (chapter 3), has received significant input and review from SEG-OGRC members and will hopefully be of value to geophysical practitioners, as well as to all petroleum engineers. Furthermore, references are made to the use of Seismic Technology for unconventional resources estimates (Chapter 8).
At the workshop, a reminder of the main geophysical elements of the PRMS-AD will be performed. - Two SPE ATW workshops were held on the PRMS-AG guidelines in May & September 2012 in Peru and Mexico respectively, actively supported by SEG OGRC. These workshops contain a dedicated seismic section, at which relevant local case studies were discussed. Key learnings from these workshops will be shared at the 2012 SEG Workshop.
- The Canadian SEG chapter through its Chief Geophysicist Forum (CGF) reserves sub-committee has been very active in providing the COGEH with Geophysical Applications guidelines which in particular address unconventional resources. An update on the progress of this action would be presented at the workshop.
- The September 2012 special issue of The Leading Edge (TLE) is on reserves, including general articles and case studies.
The workshop will be the right time to exchange further on the presented articles. Including the four subjects mentioned above, the objective and purpose of the workshop is to exchange our respective experiences, thoughts, questions and comments on using seismic technology as part of conventional as well as non-conventional Petroleum Resources estimation and classification process. Please bring your own examples for active discussion!
