Speaker
Dr. Christina Massell Symons Science Coordinator, The DEEPSEA CHALLENGE Expedition
Dr. Christina Massell Symons is the science coordinator for The DEEPSEA CHALLENGE Expedition. She received her Ph.D. in earth sciences in 2002 from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where she logged over 200 days at sea onboard numerous research vessels mapping the seafloor along the rim of the Pacific Ocean Basin, including two days below sea level in the DSV Alvin and DSRV Avalon. Dr. Christina Massell Symons' primary focus was to investigate the tectonic processes of the subducting plates at the Peru-Chile Trench, the Tonga-Kermadec Trench, and the Aleutian Trench. Her exploration of trenches, the earth's fi nal frontier, supported her research to unravel the complex tectonic history of the Pacifi c Basin. Following completion of postdoctoral research, Symons worked on a National Science Digital Library collection, a collaborative effort among scientists, librarians, educators, and data managers to create a digital library environment for earth science education. As a science spokeswoman, she is eager to share her enthusiasm for exploration of our planet in hopes of inspiring future scientists, educators, and leaders.
