Bayou Bash at the Houston House of Blues

by Spring Harris

Wednesday Night Event - Bayou BashAt 6 p.m. on Wednesday night, two hours after the closing of the exhibit hall floor, SEG meeting attendees celebrated the end of another successful meeting with a Bayou Bash at the Houston House of Blues.

The Houston House of Blues opened in 2008, and continues the tradition of all House of Blues venues by displaying the "Crazy Quilt," the curtain for their main stage, and keeping a metal box of mud from the Mississippi Delta under the stage. In honor of local blues artists, the Houston House of Blues displays a mural of local music legends Big Momma Thornton, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Albert Collins Johnny "Guitar" Watson. It is under the gaze of these music luminaries that the SEG delegates, exhibitors, and staff spent the last night of the 2013 Annual Meeting.

Upon entering the House of Blues, guests were met with four rooms of entertainment and food. In the Music Hall, a band called The Spasmatics played popular songs like Jesse's Girl and Mickey on the main stage. Guests took the opportunity to dance when they weren't enjoying the sliders food station or the beignet bar. Wednesday Night Event - Bayou BashIf Bayou Bash attendees were in the mood for a quieter venue, they could wander into the Foundation Room. Its India-inspired theme provided fabric-draped walls, India-themed art, and more intimate seating arrangements perfect for enjoying the antipasto bar or the bananas foster and cherries jubilee dessert bars. In addition to the musical entertainment, guests could get air-sprayed or henna tattoos, or they could sit down with one of the six fortunetellers waiting to read their cards or their palms.

On the other side of the Foundation Room lay the Bronze Peacock Room. Its colorful décor offered guests a relaxing place to sit and enjoy music from the two pianos that graced the stage. Food offerings in this room included voodoo shrimp and cornbread as well as an assortment of pastries on the cupcake bar.

The final room where guests could mingle and celebrate the close of the meeting was the Crossroads at the House of Blues. This room hosted a taco station, popcorn chicken, and a Mardi Gras dessert display. All of which could be enjoyed while listening to a Stevie Ray Vaughn Tribute Band.

The party shut down at 9 p.m. and guests slowly left the House of Blues to make their way home and plan for next year's Annual Meeting in Denver.
