Attending SEG Houston 2013

If this is your first visit to the SEG Annual Meeting - or if you're just looking for a refresher on what to expect - you can see below for some useful tips and tricks garnered from years of experience with this event.

What to Keep in Mind
  • Make sure your time is well spent by planning out which events you would like to attend and which booths you would like to visit.
  • The Annual Meeting is a wonderful networking opportunity, so bring plenty of business cards, and don't be shy about introducing yourself.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as you may be walking or standing quite a bit!
  • Download the SEG Annual Meeting mobile app to your Android phone, iPhone, iPad, Windows Phone, or Blackberry
What to bring with you to Houston

There are a lot of items which we could mention in this section, but only one which can make or break your annual meeting experience: your confirmation letter. This is the letter you receive via email upon registering in advance for the Annual Meeting - it is our proof that you are indeed registered, and it must be submitted before you will receive your badge (see below).

This year your confirmation letter will include a bar code which will be scanned at registration to verify your identity. Please make sure to bring a photo ID in order to confirm your identity and receive your badge.

As soon as you receive it, check your confirmation letter to ensure that it accurately reflects your personal details. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact SEG Registration at registration@seg.org or by phone at +1-918-497-5542.

What to carry with you during the meeting

Annual Meeting BadgeYour official badge for SEG Houston 2013 is your passport to attending events at the Annual Meeting and networking with contacts at the International Exhibition:

  • Your badge will be issued to you at the time you present your confirmation letter at Registration (see above). You will also be given a badge holder, tickets to any events you may have registered to attend, exchange vouchers, and registration bags (a collection of goodies and trinkets to enhance your Annual Meeting experience).
  • Your badge must be prominently displayed at all times while you are in the convention center.
  • Your badge contains information about all events and courses which you have registered to attend, and in most cases you will not be granted admission without it.
  • Your badge contains information which can be used for lead collection by our provider on-site. This means that any booth at the Exhibition will be able to scan your badge (with your consent) and receive your contact information, more quickly and effectively than distributing business cards.
  • Do not lose your badge. Replacement of lost badges will be accompanied by a US$200 replacement fee. Badges cannot be exchanged between persons or transferred to another person, and should be kept on your person at all times.
How to plan/book your travel and accomodation

Before you book your travel, consider that you may want to extend your stay in Houston for more than just the period of the meeting itself (22-27 September 2013). If you come the weekend before you can register for Continuing Education courses or the Distinguished Instructor Short Course (DISC). If you stay an additional two days after the meeting is over, you can attend Post-Convention Workshops.

Book your housing through SEG to get discounted rates! SEG works exclusively with the housing provider Experient to ensure that you have a wide range of possible hotels to choose from. If you wish to enjoy the SEG discount, do not book through any other provider. The housing reservations system opens 8 July.

Be especially wary of third-party housing agencies that claim to service the SEG Annual Meeting, as these are often "pirates" or poachers of group rooms who offer rates lower than official block rates, only to demand payment upfront, change the quality of the room originally offered, and prevent you from recovering your payment. Reservations made through any party other than Experient cannot be guaranteed.

What to do in Houston

As the fourth largest city in the US, Houston is a thriving metropolis with a great deal of sights, activities, and nightspots to enjoy. To get the full scope of all that Houston has to offer, we recommend visiting the Houston Convention and Visitor's Bureau website at www.visithoustontexas.com. One great way to see as much of Houston as possible at great savings is to get a Houston Citypass.

Dining

Houston features a variety of eateries and celebrity chefs as wide as the state it's in. Catch some of Houston's hottest by visiting Hugo's, Tony's, Uchi, or Underbelly. If you're looking for the perfect steak, try Churrascos, Killen's, or Pappas Brothers. If barbecue is your thing, visit Goode Co. Barbecue. Looking for great pizza? Try Dolce Vita. Oysters? Visit Reef. And if you'll only be making it for breakfast, visit The Breakfast Klub.

Attractions

There is much to see and do in Houston, and we highly recommend you visit attractions such as the Space Center Houston, the Downtown Aquarium, the Moody Gardens, the Battleship Texas with the nearby Jacinto Monument. If you're mostly interested in having fun, you can look forward to the shops and restaurants of the Kemah Boardwalk, or you can even jump right in the water by visiting the Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark, and, of course, the Houston Zoo.

Culture

Houston offers a large number of museums for discerning travellers, with museums such as the internationally recognised Menil Collection, the Museum of Natural Science, the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Holocaust Museum Houston, the "Garage Mahal" Art Car Museum, the Houston Center for Photography, the Lawndale Art Center and even the National Museum of Funeral History, to name but a few.

Outdoors

Houson is a great place to get to know mother nature with outdoor attractions including Buffalo Bayou, Discovery Green, the Armand Bayou Nature Center, Brazos Bend State Park, Mercer Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, not to mention the multitude of Gulf Coast beaches.
