Students in particular can benefit from attending the SEG Annual Meeting, whether they are seeking to build their career prospects, enhance their education, or simply have fun with like-minded science students from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Below are a selection of the events students can look forward to at SEG Houston 2013.

Student Pavilion

A space for students who are seeking professional advancement while networking with industry leaders, faculty members, SEG volunteers, and fellow colleagues, the Student Pavilion offers presentations on what is important to know as a young professional to succeed in the geosciences industry. Last year's topics included current industry trends, résumé writing, interviewing skills, career advancement tips, and curriculum paths, as well as new SEG student programs.

Student Career Panel

A forum dedicated to exploring exciting career opportunities in the field of geophysics, the Student Career Panel typically brings together senior managers and professionals from international and domestic oil companies, geophysical service companies, and/or academic institutions.

SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium

This focused program of leadership skills development includes best practice presentations, professional leadership coaching, organized team building activities, and a Strategic Problem Solving Session with the SEG Executive Committee. The Leadership Symposium is one and a half days in duration. Fifty student leaders will be selected to attend, with travel grants provided to those who are currently active officers of an SEG Student Chapter.

SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program

This 2 - 2½ day program includes lectures and exercises efficiently delivered/conducted and directly related to geoscience/geophysical work performed in the oil industry. ExxonMobil provides course materials, team exercises, and instructors. Travel grants are available to graduate students who are pursuing a master's degree or PhD in the Geosciences. (Consideration will be given to highly qualified undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor's degree.)

AAPG/SEG Student Expo

The Student Expo is a unique event for linking geosciences students with industry recruiters. Students benefit by networking, sharing their resume, presenting their research, and interviewing with multiple employers. Activities at the two-day event include open poster sessions on geology and geophysics, poster awards, multiple field-trip and short-course options, company-sponsored Ice Breaker, and a potentially full day of poster presentations and interviews!

SEG Challenge Bowl Finals

This much-anticipated international contest seeks to test university students' knowledge in the field of geosciences. Over the past year, participating university students have competed in regional competitions all over the world, in hopes of winning a chance to take part in this final competition!

Student Networking Event

Every year the Student Networking Event provides students an opportunity to network with industry recruiters in a relaxed atmosphere. Students can meet sponsors and visit with faculty and friends in an exciting evening of networking, food, drinks, and fun. Faculty Advisor Workshop

A workshop specifically designed for active SEG Student Chapter Faculty Advisors, this provides a focused program designed to share how best to enable effective Student Chapters, as well as how SEG can best serve the needs of professors and university departments. Active faculty advisors representative of SEG's worldwide network of more than 265 Student Chapters are eligible to attend.

Career Placement Area

The Career Placement Area provides job seekers and students a place to post résumés and visit with company representatives, right on the exhibition floor. Companies will have individual booths for discussions about employment opportunities,internships, educational requirements, and interviews for potential employment.
