W-15: Are We Able to Detect and Characterize Fractures?
Friday, 27 September 8:30 - 5:00 pm
Organizers: Ali Tura, Colin Sayers, Jim Gaiser E-mail Contact: Ali.Tura@conocophillips.com Through the support of the SEG Research Committee
There has recently been much interest in characterizing fractures from seismic data but are we actually detecting fractures? If so, it is important to calibrate with other observations. In this workshop we will have experts in this area frame the issues and discuss recent advances in theory, observation, and calibration of data from cracked media.
The workshop is organized into sessions with several presentations and short discussion. Session topics are as follows:
Framing of what fractures are and their role in our industry by experts in fracture geology, completions and RE, and well logging
Laboratory and small scale generation and observations of fractures
Mechanical rock properties of fractures and cracks
Numerical modeling
Relationship to seismic properties and parameters
Field examples of integrated case studies calibrated to hard/soft fracture observations
Finally, there will be a general discussion at the end, “State of the art; What can we detect and what can we not detect?”
