This workshop will focus on the rapidly evolving problem of internal multiples. The E&P industry has shifted to new plays, both onshore and offshore, which have once again highlighted the problems associated with these multiples. Since most of our imaging techniques do not focus multiple energy properly the preferred method of dealing with multiples is to eliminate them prior to imaging. As summarized by many authors, there are several general classes of techniques to eliminate internal multiples. 1) The time-honored techniques of velocity filtering (or the many variants) are continuing to be developed, although they generally struggle to eliminate internal multiples because the velocity separation between multiples and primaries is usually very small. So people have turned to wave equation techniques that are either data driven or model driven, which include in particular 2) “feedback” type methods and 3) the Inverse Scattering Series (ISS) methods. Many other methods were also developed throughout the years but they all fall more or less in these three broad categories.

In this workshop we will present detailed discussions of the pros and cons of these techniques in various geological environments.

The workshop will be a mix of invited keynote presentations as well as short submissions, with lots of discussion periods. We encourage participants to come and highlight the problems they have encountered even if they have not found a satisfactory solution.
