W-9: Exploration of Continental Rifts: From Regional to Prospect Level

Recent success stories within East African Rift system and the role that gravity and magnetic played in them have sparked new interest in both continental rift systems and exploration approaches. This workshop, organized by SEG Gravity and Magnetics Committee, addresses the geology of continental rifts and methods of their exploration. It will discuss the petroleum potential of failed and active rift systems that are located within the continents (such as East African Rift system, Benue Trough, Reelfoot Rift, Rio Grande Rift, Rhine Graben, and etc.). While this workshop is expected to emphasize applications of gravity and magnetic methods at different stages of exploration, it will consider them as an integral part of the explorationist’s toolkit, the proper use of which can lead to new geological insights and discoveries.
