Sarah Devriese Colorado School of Mines 2009-2010 Anadarko/SEG Scholarship I received the Anadarko/SEG Scholarship for the 2009-2010 school year (my senior year at Mines). Since being awarded the scholarship, I've taken a ton more classes and participated further in school activities. I focused on advanced courses this year, primarily in gravity, magnetics, and electromagnetics. I've also taken the opportunity to take some graduate course, such as inversion, which was a challenging but rewarding class. During this year, I was the president for the Society of Student Geophysicists and coordinated volunteer events and raised money for the society. I had a great time with this... I got to know many of the lower class geophysics students as well as more graduate students. I've also been a member of Tau Beta Pi and participated in intramural sports. I was captain of a co-rec floor hockey team and we actually won this year's championship! Senior year has been phenomenal. My senior design project is wrapping up in the next few days. My team and I did an archaeological investigation using geophysics at Chimney Rock, Colorado. We used several geophysical methods to look for buried walls of a Native American settlement. Some walls have been excavated but several people were interested if other walls are still buried. Eventually, this area hopes to become a national monument and our geophysical investigations provided them with more information. It was a great experience: we traveled down there to collect data, which was on top of a mesa, with cliffs on every side. It was challenging but gave a chance to combine much of my geophysical education, from collecting data to processing to writing reports. We presented our results at the SAGEEP conference last month and also submitted an abstract to SEG for the Denver conference. I also presented research at SEG in Houston. It was the first time I presented any research like this and although I was a bit nervous, it was a great opportunity. I've been working as an undergraduate research assistant with my advisor for the last two years and am currently working on wrapping up the project. My advisor and I plan to publish a paper on the project, which I am very excited about. HancockIn my free time, I enjoy running and swimming as well as spending time with my family. My sister also attends Mines and we see each other several times during the week. My absolute favorite thing to do is snowboard. I've been doing this for three seasons now and continue to learn more and improve. I am graduating with a BS in Geophysical Engineering and minors in mathematics/computer science and geology. After graduation, I'm headed to geophysics field camp in the Buena Vista, CO area as a teaching assistant. After the field session, I plan on traveling to Vancouver, BC since I'm moving there at the end of the summer. I'll be attending the University of British Columbia for my master's and PhD in geophysics. I'm also visiting my family in Belgium before fully moving to Vancouver. After working towards a doctorate, I hope to continue doing research and hopefully teach as well. I would love to have a position as a professor or a researcher and would like to start my own company some day.
