Through professional leadership coaching, team-building activities, and global networking opportunities, the SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium transforms outstanding geoscience students into young leaders ready to excel in geophysical careers. Below are just a few of the many students who have participated in the SLS over the past 4 years.

"The SLS was a magnificent opportunity in terms of networking within the wider geophysics community, building personal leadership skills and sourcing ideas from similar groups around the world. In a broader sense, I think the SLS opened my eyes to what is possible in geophysics and the steps I need to take to be involved in its interesting evolution."

"It's the global connection I experienced during the symposium. The chance I got to meet other 52 students from 31 countries was such a blessing and a great honor to me. I learned new perspective about leadership and had an opportunity to practice it right away with my global friends. Those are the things I liked best about this program."

"The SLS gave us the chance to network with students representing different universities from all over the world. It really helped us to develop our leadership skills that we will definitely need in our future career. It also made us feel more confident about ourselves and it enhanced our knowledge and skills in various disciplines including leadership, team work, and problem solving. Moreover, we had the opportunity to meet with professional people from both industry and academia. Ultimately, this is really an excellent experience that is worth to be a part of."

"The idea that there is an emotional component which separates cooperation and collaboration was new. The ideas presented lead me to be introspective and to evaluate the aspects that limit my being more productive and effective in the pursuit of my PhD and my working with others. For me, getting to higher level aspects of collaborative leadership is a challenge and the activity served to bring to the fore the importance of trusting your leader, introspection and self adjustment (change you so as to effect change in others), respecting of the ideas of others, and vulnerability."

"Without Chevron's sponsorship of this excellent program, I would not have had to the opportunity to meet the people that I did and make as many contacts with people from across the world. The experience of being in a leadership role with fifty other students from around the world was a challenge for me, but a challenge that taught me a great deal about myself and how to interact with others. I learned valuable skills that will not only help me in my career pursuits but also help our student chapter and our department succeed in our future endeavors. I hope that Chevron will continue to sponsor the Student Leadership symposium in the future as, having experienced it, I think it is a great opportunity for the students, the SEG, and for Chevron."
