Frequently asked questions about the SEG Foundation | | Click on a question listed below to see the answer. How does my donation help my profession, my career, and my Society? SEG and the SEG Foundation are partners in a very special venture. Together the entities of SEG offer support, growth, and encouragement to past, present, and future geoscientists around the world. Thanks to its generous donors, the SEG Foundation is able to support your profession, your career, and your Society. As a member of the SEG, doesn't a portion of my dues help support the SEG Foundation? The Foundation is a separate 501(c)(3) charitable not-for-profit organized specifically organized to provide the management, reporting, and stewardship services that donors require. No portion of SEG dues helps support the activities of the SEG Foundation. However, for your convenience, the SEG includes a section on the dues renewal form for members to voluntarily contribute to the SEG Foundation with their dues payment. This is available both with the paper dues renewal form and online. What is the relationship between the SEG and the SEG Foundation? The Foundation is a separate 501(c)(3) charitable not-for-profit organized specifically to provide management, reporting and stewardship services that donors require. SEG provides some administrative and logistical support. The Foundation depends upon annual contributions like yours to fund important programs for members of the SEG and society-at-large. Will my gift really make a difference? Absolutely! When you give to the SEG Foundation you support the future of your profession and invest in your own career. By donating to the Foundation's programs you help advance geophysics today and inspire the geoscientists of tomorrow What does the Foundation consider a gift? A gift is defined as any transfer of personal or real property made voluntarily and without consideration. Payments for goods or services may not be applied as gifts or contributions in the donor records. Gifts usually take the form of cash, securities, real property or personal property. The following criteria generally identify a gift:
- A gift is motivated by charitable intent.
- Gifts are irrevocable transfers of assets. The Foundation is not obliged to return unexpended funds. (If for some reason, the Foundation is unable to comply with the donor's intent, or if the gift has been misdirected to the Foundation, a return of gift may be issued at the Foundation's discretion, less any out of pocket expenses. The Board of Directors is authorized to approve the return of a gift.)
- A gift is not completed until it has been accepted by the Foundation.
