Geoscientists Without Borders participates in panel discussion at Science and Human Rights Coalition

In January, The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) hosted the meeting of the Science and Human Rights Coalition. Although not a member of the coalition, the SEG Foundation Program Geoscientists Without Borders was one of four new organizations to be invited as part of a panel discussion on the use of scientists and their tools for humanitarian benefits in Washington, DC. The other groups participating were On-Call Scientists, Scientists without Borders and Statistics without Borders. All of the programs either began work or were formed in 2008. As part of the panel, Geoscientists Without Borders stood out as the one program actually applying the science of geophysics in the field and fund the projects. The following quote by an SEG member was included. "As scientists, we have a love for finding answers and strive during our careers to use our research for beneficial activities," said Alexander Mihai Popovici, current committee chair of Geoscientists Without Borders. "It is great to see both these passions come together, bringing basic human rights and the benefits of science to people who need it." Watch for more details in the announcements of recently selected projects soon.
