Dr. Saskia van Manen
Branco Weiss Research Fellow
Faculty of Science, Department of Environment, Earth & Ecosystems
Open University, UK

Born in the Netherlands, Dr. van Manen completed her MSc in Geophysics from Imperial College in 2006; then completed her PhD in Volcanology at the Open University in 2010. Dr. van Manen's PhD research focused on eruptive processes as observed in satellite data and using analysis of thermal signatures to develop automated algorithms to forecast volcanic explosions.

As a Branco Weiss fellow, Dr. Saskia van Manen will undertake research to quantify the impact of active volcanoes on their environment and local population, by tracking volcanic gases from source to sink. This will be achieved through the integration of geophysics and geochemistry with public engagement and hazard awareness in a comprehensive monitoring system. Target volcanoes for the research are in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, though the methods that are developed will be transferrable to other active volcanoes and their local communities.
