Geoscientists Without Borders® Johannesburg Area, South Africa: "Hydrogeophysical Investigation of the Impact of Invasive Tree Species on Groundwater at the Dayspring Children's Village, South Africa University of Witwatersrand." | | Partners: Green Engineering, Inc., Berkeley, CA, USA, Stanford University, USA, McMaster University, Canada Geophysical Surveys and System, Pinegowrie, ZA, Working for Water, Dept Water Affairs & Forestry, ZA, Day Spring Children's Village students and personnel, ZA Summary: This project will involve geophysics students using a variety of geophysical methods to map and assess the hydrological conditions at the Dayspring Children's Village, South Africa. Over the last 30 years the ground water at the school has dried up and it is suspected that a large stand of invasive trees may be contributing to the depletion and lack or recharge to the aquifer. The site provides an ideal case study to investigate the influence of invasive trees on ground water. To date, no quantitative studies on this issue have been conducted in South Africa. This two year study will be an intensive geophysical investigation, involving students from first year through to graduate students, aimed at restoring a sufficient water supply to the Dayspring School and documenting the effect of invasive trees on ground water for broader application throughout South Africa. Success in the project will ensure the viability of the school and enable it to expand its program.
